This Saturday, May 28, 2022, Myrtle Beach’s Farrow Parkway in The Market Common will be awash in red, white and blue as the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Myrtle Beach celebrate the Memorial Day weekend with the annual Military Appreciation Days Parade and Picnic.
The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. and will feature the Parris Island (S.C.) Marine Corps Band, one of the premier military bands in America, and more than 50 additional participants, including local veteran organizations, high school color guards and JROTC drill teams, over 20 corvettes, Miss Myrtle Beach and “The Band” Marching Unit from Baltimore. Two World War II veterans from the Grand Strand, Clarence Thompkins and William Kirby, will serve as honorary grand marshals.
The parade will begin near the intersection of Pampas Dr. and Howard Ave., then move north on Howard Ave. and west along Farrow Pkwy through The Market Common to Forbus Ct.
Following the parade, the annual family picnic at Valor Memorial Garden will offer free hamburgers and hotdogs provided by the Omar Chefs Shriners as well as military exhibits and displays.
The festivities continue on Memorial Day Monday with the Jack Platt Veterans’ March and Battlefield Cross Ceremony at 9 a.m. along Ocean Boulevard from 16th to Ninth Avenues North; the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, 2101 North Oak Street; and a complimentary showing of the film “Soldier Stories: Valor in Vietnam” at 2 p.m. at Grand 14 Cinemas, 4002 DeVille Street.
