Celebrating Small Businesses

We’re celebrating small businesses all September.

Each year we join the U.S. Small Business Administration in observing National Small Business Week. It’s an annual tradition that recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners has been celebrated by the SBA for more than 50 years. The week runs Sept. 13-17 this year.

Nationally, the SBA says more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business and they create two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. The Grand Strand follows the national trend and most of the chamber’s investors are small businesses with 65 percent of our membership reporting having 9 or fewer employees.

JOBS: When businesses grow, more jobs open up. The new employees and their families then add their support and spend money in the community.

OUR SHOPS HELP PEOPLE: Local businesses are more likely to support local charities, schools and events. Supporting local shops makes it possible for these businesses to to give back to the community.

BE DISTINCT: Local shops tend to local needs. They know you and create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products to cater to the community.

PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT: Local shops often stock a high percentage of local goods. That means less gas is used to transfer goods, which also means a cleaner environment. Plus, local foods are better for you!

CONVENIENT FOR EVERYONE: Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the young, elderly and anyone without transportation.

BRING MORE TO THE GRAND STRAND: Private and public sector services cluster around shops. The more they see economic growth, the more attracted they are to moving their business here.
