Ground Zero Named October Leading Business of the Month

By Amanda Blomquist, business development marketing coordinator

Dragons, Christian music, coffee and youth ministry. How could those work together? Pretty seamlessly if you’re Ground Zero.

The nonprofit located on Chester Street in Myrtle Beach is our October Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.

Ground Zero is a place where all teenagers can go, belong and grow. Christian ministry is at the heart of the organization. They host various events throughout the month for teenagers whether they just need a place to hang out, want to be involved in a small group, develop their leadership skills or want to dive deeper into their Christian faith.

Ground Zero also brings Christian music to stage in Myrtle Beach, either downtown at their facility, outside on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, or at other area churches.

It’s housed in what used to be the Rivoli Theatre a block from the ocean in downtown Myrtle Beach. The Rivoli was a place for teens to hangout from 1958 through its closure in the early 1980s. The building later housed a night club for a little while, then a children’s theater. In the late 1990s was acquired by the City of Myrtle Beach with initial plans to turn it into a performing arts center. Ground Zero has leased the building since 2011.

The smell of fresh coffee hits first when you walk in the door thanks to the café, open only during special events, at the front of the building. Further inside is a mixed-use area that leads right up to a pit and stage.

Still wondering how dragons fit in the mix?

Ground Zero is the host of the Dragon Boat Festival each April at The Market Common. It’s part fundraiser, part outreach and all fun. And yes, registration is already open for the 12th Annual Ground Zero Dragon Boat Festival slated for April 25, 2020.
