Lakewood Camping Resort Named September Leading Business of the Month

Lakewood Camping Resort is our September Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.

Lakewood Camping Resort was originally launched by founder Carl Perry as Camp Beechwood in 1959 in a plot of land across from Myrtle Beach State Park. In 1961, the family campground moved to its current site and was renamed Lakewood Family Campground.

Carl, a Lake City native, operated the campground with his wife, Marion, and their four children. Together they continued to upgrade the sites with sewage and electricity hookups and new amenities like modern bathhouses, themed pools, a miniature golf course and arcade.

After Carl passed in 1980, the campground became Lakewood Camping Resort signaling their transition to a full-fledged vacation resort. The campground now has 1,300 campsites, 1,100 vacation homes and more than 100 vacation rentals. It continues to innovate with plans to continue welcoming visitors for generations to come.

Lakewood Camping Resort is home to High Steppin' Country - a high energy, two-hour variety show that started in 1976. The show is included in the cost of a stay for Lakewood Campers, but tickets are available for the public to purchase.

Each month, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announces a Leading Business of the Month. This special promotion, sponsored by South State Bank, recognizes a company that has been a member of Myrtle Beach Area Chamber for a minimum of five years. The business is randomly selected. The company displays a banner at their place of business for one month recognizing them as the Leading Business of the Month.
