Keeping Myrtle Beach Safe

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and the Myrtle Beach Police Department is working to keep our community and visitors safe.

NOTE: Due to COVID-19, the 2021 Atlantic Beach BikeFest held during the Memorial Day weekend, has been canceled, according to officials with the Town of Atlantic Beach. However, bikers and visitors are still expected.

Here are some public safety guidelines to know before you go.

Myrtle Beach Police Department will have a traffic management plan in place over Memorial Day weekend to help keep traffic moving and everyone safe. Everyone will have access to their hotels and attractions but should plan accordingly for traffic.

The City of Myrtle Beach will start the following traffic plan for Memorial Day Weekend, beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, May 28. This traffic plan will conclude on Monday, May 31, at 6 a.m.

  • All traffic on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach is one-way, southbound, from 29th Avenue North to 28th Avenue South. Northbound lanes of Ocean Boulevard are reserved for emergency vehicles only.
  • Access to Ocean Boulevard begins on Kings Highway at 29th Avenue North, with no access north of that point. Exits from Ocean Boulevard may be permitted at those cross streets with traffic signals on Kings Highway, except from 10 p.m.-2 a.m.
  • Motorists will access Ocean Boulevard only from an access avenue that has a stoplight at Kings Highway. The access avenues are 21st Ave. N., Mr. Joe White Ave., 9th Ave. N., 3rd Ave. S., 9th Ave. S., 13th Ave. S., 19th Ave. S., 25th Ave. S., 27th Ave. S., and 29th Ave. S.
  • The following avenues have been designated as emergency avenues: 16th Ave. N., 8th Ave. N., 6th Ave. S. and 17th Ave. S. These lanes have been designated for use by public safety and city officials.
  • For safety, pedestrians will be separated from vehicles along Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to 29th Avenue South. Barriers will be in place to prevent pedestrians from entering the roadway.
  • No golf carts will be allowed on Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to the southern point of Myrtle Beach city limits. This excludes golf carts used by the Police Department to monitor traffic and maintain public safety. The ban goes into effect at 12:01 a.m., Friday, May 28, and expires when the traffic control devices are removed on Monday, May 31.

“The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau is advising area officials, business owners and employees, and residents that this Memorial Day weekend will bring a heavy volume of visitors to the Grand Strand. Occupancy rates are estimated to be above 80 percent,” said Karen Riordan, MBACC president and CEO. “While we’re welcoming these visitors, we’re also encouraging them to have a fun-yet-safe holiday experience, to continue to take health and safety precautions, and to be patient on the road and with our businesses as they continue to ramp up to accommodate this increased demand.”
