Beginning July 1, North Myrtle Beach will require all businesses to eliminate single-use plastic bags.

Leaders enacted the change to help reduce plastic waste and protect beaches and waterways.

The ordinance includes any single-use carryout plastic bag “made predominantly of plastic derived from petroleum or a biologically based source.”

Businesses may continue using paper bags and reusable bags.

North Myrtle Beach is the 15th community in South Carolina and the second on the Grand Strand requiring businesses to eliminate the use of plastic bags with the goal of reducing pollution. Surfside Beach passed a similar ordinance in 2018.
