You and Your Skin: A Love Story

By Vicki Jacobs – Jafra Cosmetics

With Valentine’s Day approaching, February is the time of year that we reflect on our relationships. Have you ever realized that you are in a life-long relationship with your skin? What are you doing to ensure you and your skin are enjoying a healthy, loving relationship?

You don’t need to wait until a problem develops to begin a skin care regimen, nor should you. Just like with your overall health, you want to take preventative measures before problems arise. It is never too early or too late to start a skin care regimen designed for your specific skin type. Are you in love with your current skin condition? If not you may want to consider seeking advice from a skin care consultant or dermatologist to determine what your skin needs to maintain its best appearance and health.

No matter your age, gender or ethnicity your skin needs gentle cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, year-round protection from UV light, vitamins & antioxidants as well as replenishing and restoring ingredients.

You should start a skin care routine as early as possible, keeping in mind our skin can and will change over the years and your regimen should be adjusted accordingly. Most often our skin will get drier as we age, but some people may experience an increase in oil production, breakouts and enlarged pores as their skin matures. That’s why you should always choose a skincare regimen based on your skin type and concerns, not on your age. Many companies will categorize regimens according to age, and yet this age range may not be the best regimen for your specific skin care needs.

Here’s what everyone should be doing to take care of their skin starting with childhood:
•    Wash your face with a gentle cleanser morning and night
•    In the daytime apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher – to face, neck and any other exposed areas of skin.
•    At night apply a facial moisturizer suitable for your skin type.

If you are experiencing any signs of aging of your skin such as: wrinkles, lost elasticity, sun damage or discoloration, you should consult a skin care specialist to see what supplemental products you should be using in addition to the steps above.

My personal favorite products for maintaining the health of your skin contain royal jelly. Royal jelly is a fabulous multitasking ingredient in skin care. It fights signs of aging with vitamins B, C and E. It also contains amino and fatty acids, minerals and antioxidants which soothe, nourish and heal the skin. Royal jelly is a secretion from the glands of the worker bees and used to nourish the larvae in the hive and is also the food of the queen bee. That is why the queen lives so much longer than the worker bees and in turn will also extend the health of your skin.

So for this Valentine’s Day, start a skin-loving regimen to nurture your skin as part of a loving relationship with the one who is going to be with you the longest – yourself!
